Emotional IQ?
By Alan Torres
It is said success in life is determined 10% by what happens to us, and 90% by how we react. Emotional IQ is all about the 90%, how we react under stress, social contact and everyday events.
For decades, traditional predictors of success relied heavily upon specific aspects of intelligence, such as logical reasoning, math skills, analogies, verbal skills, etc. But while IQ could predict academic performance to a significant degree, it couldn’t reliably predict success in life. And here is where Emotional IQ comes to play. The concept was made popular by Daniel Goleman and his book Emotional Intelligence.
Studies indicate for various reasons and thanks to a wide range of abilities, people with high emotional intelligence tend to be more successful in life than those with lower EIQ even if their intellectual IQ is average.
So what exactly is Emotional Intelligence?
Go on reading…
1.- Our ability to perceive accurately, appraise and express emotion.
2.- The ability to access or generate feelings when they facilitate thought
3.- The ability to understand emotion and emotional knowledge
4.- The ability to regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth
The 5 Keys to Emotional Intelligence (EIQ) Self-Awareness
Knowing yourself self is vital in EIQ as in personal development. Get to know your inner states, your thoughts, preferences, strengths and weaknesses. The ability to recognize your intuitions and follow them, to know how other people perceive us, and to recognize how we respond to others opens the door to your inner greatness. What are your dreams, what are your special talents, what do you enjoy in life, what makes you happy? These are very important questions we must answer.
Managing Emotions
To be in control of your EIQ, you must first be in control of your thoughts and impulses, or be in control of yourself. Learn to manage your talents and resources and not scatter them worthlessly. Learn to know when to act and when to restrain. For example, do you burst into tears, do you freeze in fear, do you explode when insulted? These reactions are extremely important; you must know who is in control, you or others.
Motivation
Once you learn to manage, then we look at Motivation. You must be able to motivate yourself, to recharge your spirits, to keep the flame burning inside so you can endure and reach your goals. The more I learn about EIQ the more it resembles the basics of personal development.
Empathy
Take a look at your ability to feel empathy. Highly successful people acknowledge the feelings of others, as well as their needs and concerns. They understand the point of view of other people and can place themselves in their shoes. Successful people have excellent manners and appear always pleasant and polite. Ah how wonderful is the refined soul that judges not!
Social Skills
How are your Social Skills such as your ability to make friends, your likeability? Your ability to make others feel self value is extremely important. Are you at ease in a crowd, getting along easily and do communicate effectively your ideas? How well do you handle a team environment? How quickly do you cope with a new work environment?
